Toxic Sugar

Why is sugar toxic and the cause of the obesity epidemic? A recent video called Toxic Sugar from the major Australian science program Catalyst, Is a great introduction on the true causes of the obesity epidemic.

The program features professor Robert Lustig, science writer Gary Taubes and obesity expert professor Michael Crowley.

The video correctly blames the misguided low-fat advice for an increase in sugar intake. The sugar is hiding everywhere today and virtually every food item that has a food label has some form of sugar.

What’s the problem with carbs? Too much carbs (like fizzy drinks and industry processed food) easily leads to the secretion of too much of the hormone insulin, making the body store more fat.

Trying to control your weight by just eating less and exercising more will be a life-long uphill struggle where eventually almost everybody loses. Personally, I don’t believe there is a quick-fix that works forever. To lose weight long-term you need a long-term lifestyle change. Avoiding excess sugar is a great first step. To me that long-term lifestyle change was when I a year and a half ago changed to the LCHF lifestyle.

The Toxic Sugar ends by blaming the food industry and being responsible for the obesity crisis, which I much agree with. However, we can never expect the food industry to solve the obesity problem. For food producers the junk food they sell is highly profitable and we cannot expect the food industry to stop producing it by themselves. The entire industry has to be forced to change and that is a long process which starts with understanding what you and people you care for, actually stuff yourself with. See the Toxic Sugar video and spread it to friends so they too understand. That’s a great start.

See the 18 minutes Toxic Sugar and then tell your friends. This needs to be seen by a lot of people.

  1. Yes, the media has misinformed the public. It takes more than calorie restriction and exercise to cause weight loss!
